How to Use AI to Create Better Lesson Plans: A Practical Guide for Nigerian Teachers
Most teachers who try AI tools for the first time have the same disappointing experience: they type something short and general, like “write me a lesson plan on photosynthesis,” and get back something generic, poorly aligned with their curriculum, and barely faster than writing it themselves would have been. The problem is almost never the AI tool. It is the prompt.
Step 1: Give the AI the context it actually needs
A good prompt for a lesson note includes, at minimum: the subject and topic, the class level, the curriculum you are working from (WAEC, NECO, British curriculum, or your school’s own scheme of work), the duration of the lesson, and the specific learning objectives you want covered. Compare these two prompts:
Weak: “Write a lesson plan on photosynthesis.”
Strong: “Write a 40-minute lesson note on photosynthesis for JSS2 students following the Nigerian basic science curriculum. Learning objectives: students should be able to define photosynthesis, state the chemical equation, and identify the raw materials and products. Include an introduction/hook, main teaching content, a class activity, and three assessment questions.”
The second prompt takes thirty extra seconds to write and produces an output that needs light editing rather than a full rewrite.
Step 2: Ask for structure, not just content
Tell the AI exactly how you want the output organised — headings, bullet points, a specific order. “Structure this as: Introduction, Objectives, Materials Needed, Lesson Development (with timings), Assessment, Take-home Assignment” will produce something you can use directly in your lesson note register, rather than a wall of unstructured text you have to reformat yourself.
Step 3: Generate assessment material the same way
The same principle applies to exam questions. Instead of “give me questions on this topic,” specify the exact number of questions, the format (multiple choice, theory, fill-in-the-blank), the difficulty spread, and whether you want an answer key. For example: “Generate 15 multiple-choice questions on the topic of photosynthesis for JSS2 level, with four options each, one correct answer, and a separate answer key at the end.” This produces something close to exam-ready in one pass.
Step 4: Always review before you use it
This is the step teachers are most tempted to skip, and the one that matters most. AI tools can produce content that sounds confident but contains factual errors, is pitched at the wrong level, or does not quite match your specific curriculum. Treat AI output the way you would treat a draft written by a capable but unfamiliar colleague: read it fully, correct anything that is wrong or off-target, and only then use it in the classroom.
A starting prompt you can use today
